Visiting a cannabis dispensary for the first time can be both exhilarating and a little intimidating. However, with a quick run-through of Oregon cannabis laws and what to expect when you visit, you will spend more time enjoying the experience. Here is a quick guide you can reference as you get prepared for your first trip to buy legal cannabis, hopefully here at Madrone Cannabis Club.

First time? Here’s What to Bring…

To simplify your visit, it’s helpful to know what to bring along to the dispensary. You will need to:

  • Bring your ID – A government-issued photo ID, such as your driver’s license, passport, or military ID
  • Bring the right form of payment – Dispensaries may accept only cash, but most (including Madrone) now accept debit cards
  • Bring your questions – Need help? Just ask. Don’t be afraid to ask about strains, how to use products, and what you need to know

Shopping for Cannabis in Oregon

The best dispensaries will stock their shelves with a wide range of cannabis strains and products. For example, at Madrone, we can have hundreds of different products available at any given time, including a variety of flower strains, edibles, liquids, and concentrates. You will get to take a look around, make your selections, and then check out.

It can be helpful to check out a dispensary menu online before you go to a dispensary to see what they have available. This can make your trip and assessment process a little quicker—you can ask about products you found online you think you would like to try.

Buying Weed in Oregon – Cannabis FAQs

How old do you have to be to consume cannabis?

You must be 21 years of age to legally purchase cannabis in Oregon.

How much weed can I buy at an Oregon dispensary?

As of February 2022, recreational cannabis buyers in the state can purchase up to:

  • 2 ounces of cannabis flower
  • 16 ounces of a cannabinoid-infused product in solid form, such as edibles
  • 72 ounces of cannabinoid-infused liquids, such as cannabis seltzers or drinks
  • 5 grams of inhalable cannabis products, such as vape cartridges
  • 5 grams of extracts or concentrates

To clarify, these are the purchase limits in Oregon within a single day. Therefore, if you want to go to multiple dispensaries and make purchases, you can, but you will have to be mindful of purchase limits. For example, if you buy an ounce of flower at one dispensary, you can only buy an ounce at another.

As an adage, you can purchase up to eight ounces of usable cannabis within a day if you are a registered Oregon Medical Marijuana patient with an identification card.

Can you buy cannabis if you don’t live in Oregon?

You can buy cannabis in an Oregon dispensary even if you don’t live in Oregon. The same rules apply for visitors from out of state—bring your government-issued ID and the same purchase limits will apply. Remember, though, it is illegal to travel across state lines with cannabis, even if you purchased it legally. Therefore, it is a good idea to only purchase what you know you can use before you leave the state.

Can I smoke weed in public in Oregon?

According to Oregon.gov, “the ICAA prohibits smoking in the workplace and within 10 feet of all entrances, exits and windows or air vents. The ICAA includes the use of “inhalant delivery systems” including vape pens and e-cigarettes that can be used to deliver cannabinoids, nicotine and other substances.”

Can you take pictures?

It depends. There are really no Oregon cannabis laws against taking pictures inside an Oregon dispensary. But, every dispensary does set its own guidelines about indoor photos. In any case, always be mindful of surrounding customer privacy.

Do dispensaries display their cannabis products?

The products at cannabis dispensaries are generally not out on display where you can handle the merchandise. Instead, you will see most products held in display cases. During your visit, you will likely have a budtender available to assist you while you shop. You may ask to see or smell different flower strains or products for closer inspection.
